Information on funding for vehicle adaptations

The following general information pertains to general funding strategies.  This should be a helpful starting point for you.

Funding for adapted vans usually involves funding the vehicle itself and then funding the adaptive lift.  There are no public programs that cover the cost of the van itself. However, families may get assistance through a combined effort of utilizing financial loan programs, considering used vehicles as well as new vehicles and approaching private foundations or civic groups for financial assistance.

Public programs may offer assistance with the modifications if the individual meets the criteria for eligibility and openings are available.  Eligibility may be based on income as well as type and severity of disability. Vocational Rehabilitation and Independent Living may be resources.  Contact your local VR ot IL office  to determine if you qualify for services.

The local Area Mental Health Program may cover the cost of the lift if the individual is eligible for services under various programs for people with developmental disabilities.   These programs are designed to serve the needs of people with developmental disabilities so they can remain in the community.  You may want to contact your area mental health program and speak with the Developmental Disabilities coordinator to discuss this further.  The phone number for the local Area Mental Health Program is 571-4980.

One resource may be a financial loan.  You can check with your bank or credit union to see if you would qualify for a loan.  To be approved for a loan, you have to show that you can pay the money back.  This is usually done through monthly installments.

PAT publishes The Exchange Post, which lists items people want to sell.  This publication is distributed monthly often includes adapted vans.  The Exchange Post is a listing not an endorsement of items.  All transactions are between buyer and seller.  You can see a listing at www.pat.org

Sometimes vendors who modify vans have used lifts and know of customers who are trying to sell their vans.  Others dealing with adaptive driving may also know of used equipment.  As with any purchase, it is important that you “shop around” for the vendor that is qualified to best meet your needs.
