Keith Scott “Bo” Coble's Success Story

Hey, my name is Keith Scott “Bo” Coble but just call me Bodacious!  I’m 40 years old and I live in Winston-Salem, NC.  I have Muscular Dystrophy or more specifically Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

I have been using the computer for five (5) years. I use  voice commands to operate my computer,   Dragon Dictate and Dragon Naturally Speaking.  I keep very busy with the above aids, but the projects that occupy much of my time are on the computer.

I design all the artwork for the decals on my models (Bodacious Rides!).  The software I use for this process is Sign-Dex and Freehand. As I started out with climbing this what I thought was such a tall mountain to climb, I thought it would be necessary for a piece of equipment called a Jouse (I’m supposing this name derives from the mouse and using the jaw). This equipment would have allowed for more precise drawings and also saved much time, but after experiencing the programs and with time I learned I could accomplish the same results with just voice command alone.  I found the Jouse required too much physical strain to my liking, yet with others it may have worked well.  I have actually had those people that gave me a little teaching along the way say that they would like me to teach them now!

And for my own pleasure I like downloading songs from the Internet and burning my own CDs.  My variety of music includes most everything except Rap, I just hate that stuff!  I’d have to say my favorite is a Carolina boy named James Taylor.  Though I love classic rock and country.  I have downloaded probably over 2000 songs, don’t tell anyone please!

I have learned many things after acquiring my computer by researching on the Internet which goes to show you that can teach an old dog new stuff.  I’ve met many people online and some I have been able to help point in the right directions because of my own experiences which gives me lots of satisfaction in helping others.  I also must say that overall the credit for my success at all of my ventures must be credited to my faith in my very best friend, Jesus.

The assistive technology that I use includes: a quartet environmental control system which allows me to use the telephone (answering and dialing).  This system operates by way of sip-n-puff control, as does my electric wheelchair.  Last, but certainly not least, is my computer, which I operate totally by voice command.

I run a small yet strong corporation by way of this, BODACIOUS PRODUCTIONS INC. I designed all my packaging and actually do layouts of the products by way of schematic drawings before I sit with someone to actually do the physical manufacturing of the products themselves.  With the proper assistive technology equipment and the ability to communicate with other people, I feel there is nothing that I can’t do in my situation only that it takes a little longer, but the results are bodacious just the same!

I also do sign work!  Involved in this process is mainly the sign-dex program, the scanner, and the cutting plotter.  I recently replaced the decals on my nephew's friends motorcycle; and if I say so myself, it looks simply bodacious!  I must say that using the cutting plotter requires assistance from someone.  They must help set the vinyl in place and weed the vinyl after it has been cut by the plotter.  I’m not able also to actually apply the vinyl to its destination.  Here again with proper communication I can get the job done anyway!

I’m also currently building my own website, www.BodaciousRides.com.  Please keep this on your list to “must see”.  I’m not there yet but hopefully very soon there will be a very bodacious place to be on the Internet.
